“I became a low-rolling resistance wheel junkie in the late 1970s, when I stepped off of Road Riders and onto the then-new Kryptonics Star-Tracs. Man, I can still remember the distinctive ‘hisssss!’ those original red Kryps made rolling down the road!
Since then I’ve been on a private crusade to find and ride the skateboard wheel with the best roll. While not a comprehensive list, my trek took me through V12 N-Gens in the late 1990s, to select wheels from Kryptonics, Hyper, 3dm and ABEC11, culminating with the the ABEC11 Reflex formula Zig Zags. But there’s a new sheriff in town, and he’s called Black Ops.
I just bought a set of Seismic Hot Spots in translucent orange 78A. These are poured in Seismic’s new Black Ops urethane formula, and they are the best rolling wheel I’ve ever been on. Smooth as butter and grippy as all get out, too. Thus far I’ve only ridden them on a grungy old set of $10 Pleasure Tool bearings, and they’re still amazing! I can’t wait to clean my ceramic bearings and run them with the Black Ops… that will be the ultimate.
A most interesting sensation with these wheels is when you are slowing down over a flat area. They slow at a predictable rate, but then they hit a certain speed and it’s as if you just rode off the asphalt and onto a linoleum floor… they want to keep going and going! LDP fans are going to love these, especially in the larger diameters.”
